This workshop introduces participants to sumi-e, the Japanese art of ink painting. Working with brush, ink, and paper, participants will experience how a painted image can emerge through attention, repetition, and the disciplined use of the brush.

Taught by artist Ayan Rivera, whose work bridges classical sumi-e brush practice and contemporary abstraction, the workshop offers a focused encounter with the materials and principles of sumi-e.

Participants will learn the basics of preparing ink, handling the brush, and working with line, pressure, movement, and space. Through demonstration, guided practice, and individual feedback, the workshop will focus on one or two classical brush subjects, such as bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, or pine.

The emphasis is not on producing a perfect representation, but on beginning to sense how brush, ink, paper, and attention work together. Participants will begin on practice paper and develop sensitivity to the way ink responds to the surface.

No previous experience is required. The workshop is open to beginners, artists from other disciplines, and anyone drawn to a focused, attentive art practice rooted in brush, ink, repetition, and form.

Participants will leave with a first experience of sumi-e, familiarity with basic brushwork, and an introduction to ink painting as an ongoing practice of attention, discipline, and discovery.
