Sculptures in Memory of Avi Ran on Haifa's Southern Promenade
The sculptures in memory of Avi Ran (a goalie for the Maccabi Haifa soccer team, who was killed in a 1987 accident) are a joint project of the City of Haifa and the Haifa Museums. The Sculpture Garden, which was built by the Haifa Municipality thanks to the contribution of Udi Angel, opened to the public in April 2006. The park extends along a new promenade that runs from the southern entrance to Haifa in the direction of Tirat Hakarmel (road no. 4).
Approximately 20 prominent Israeli artists were invited to submit proposals for the garden. The jury chose five sculptures by prominent young Israeli artists: Yochai Avrahami, Magnetic Grass; Hilla Ben-Ari, Reserve; Ram Katzir, Hide and Seek; Gal Weinstein, White Game - Black Work; and Guy Zagursky, Matte.
The jury included representatives of the Haifa Municipality and of the Haifa Museum of Art: Nissim Tal, director general of the Haifa Museums; Ami Shavit, chair of the Committee for Outdoor Sculpture at the Haifa Municipality; architect Ziva Kolodney, a member of the Haifa Museums' board of directors; Tami Katz-Freiman, chief curator of the Haifa Museum of Art; Ruti Direktor, director of the University of Haifa Art Gallery; and Ilana Tenenbaum, curator and director of the New Media Center at the Haifa Museum of Art.
