Selected Works III, 1978-1979 (video still), video, 19:22 minutes, sound, b/w and color, courtesy Electronic Arts Intermix [EAI], New York

Gary Hill

The works by Gary Hill that are included in Selected Works III (1978-1979) combine visual and electronic phenomena with linguistic elements and sound in order to draw parallels between them. In his work Full Circle, formerly Ring Modulation (1978), for instance, the screen is divided into three parts, and the appearance of the body on each of these parts looks like a live sculptural act performed by electronic means. In another work, Primary (1978), Hill's lips are seen mouthing the names of different colors, in accordance with the changing color of the overall image. The different ludic principles according to which Hill integrated his body with visual and audio elements were made possible by new video technologies at the threshold of the 1980s.

Born in California, 1951; lives and works in Seattle, Washington
