avaf - assume vivid astro focus
The "avaf" collective's name is related to an ideology that calls for artistic freedom, for the effacement of artistic hierarchies and of the artist's ego and for creative collaboration. This artist has created a range of multimedia works that include wallpaper, videos, painting, lighting projects, stickers, t-shirts and sound works. He presents his works in the context of group exhibitions and at party-like events. This strategy involves an implicit critique of the contemporary art scene and of the West's sanctification of private property and of artist rights - especially in an art world context. The name "avaf" combines the names of two experimental music groups - "Assume Power Focus" and "Ultra Vivid Scene." Butch Queen 4 is a kaleidoscopic collage, whose pattern has been tailored to fit the museum's entrance walls; it serves as the background for Edna Ohana's work Filiality, thus giving expression to avaf's concept of artistic collaboration. The images that come together to form the wallpaper pattern are borrowed from various cultures and sources - old American coloring books, kimono patterns, music magazines, Tibetan painting and graffiti; they bespeak a nostalgic longing for the optimistic spirit of the 1960s and 1970s.
