Kedma (1)

The first passenger ship of the Israeli Merchant Marine, Kedma was built in England in 1926, and was initially called Kedah. It was designed to transport passengers and cargo to the Far East. In 1946, the vessel was purchased by the Zim company, the national shipping company founded a year earlier, together with the British company Harris & Dixon. On July 28, 1947, after many delays and setbacks, Kedma first sailed into the port of Tel Aviv. Its arrival was much anticipated, making headlines in the local press. Kedma was part of the national struggle for independence, and flew a blue and white flag alongside the official flag of flown during the British Mandate. It was known as the "First Hebrew ship."
